With the 2017 Major League Baseball in its last six weeks or so, let’s look at the best defensive players from each position and see who will be rewarded for their excellence. The voting process for the Gold Glove winners is determined by the managers and coaches, and they cannot vote for their own players. In 2013, Major League Baseball added new defensive metrics. For example, Range Factor. Range Factor is calculated by adding the total number of putouts and assists that a player has and multiplying the total by 9 innings and divide the number by the total innings played. Range Factor was just one example of the new metrics that determine a players true fielding ability. As of today, managers and coaches are given a defensive sheet where the managers and coaches can see who has the best defensive statistics for the year.
