The Trade
Matt Kemp, Alex Wood and Kyle Farmer have been traded to the Reds alongside the Cuban All-Star. Los Angeles will also send a total of $7 million to Cincinnati. The Dodgers will receive veteran pitcher Homer Bailey alongside prospects Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray in exchange
Why Did It Happen?
While the Reds certainly look like they got the better half of the trade, the Dodgers have a valid reason behind this blockbuster transaction. Los Angeles had to clear money under the luxury-tax threshold as their high payroll seems unsustainable for 2019. Not to mention, trading Puig gives the Dodgers a chance at acquiring free agent Bryce Harper.
How Will This Trade Shape 2019?
A big gamble such as this could make or break the Dodgers’ season. Not only is this a big personnel cutback for them, but they also traded one of their core players away.
Meanwhile, the Reds will benefit from Los Angeles’ payroll struggles. Despite giving away a top prospect such as Downs, Puig could turn into the core of a much needed renovation.
